"So James Bond had better watch his back, because there's a new MI6 superspy in town who's about to take over Hollywood, and her name is Lorraine Broughton." ― Bustle

- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2018Since it's black and white and some of the art is cryptic, the story was difficult to follow at times or the characters got confusing. It helped that I saw the movie first. Had to read some pages more than once. But then it all makes sense because it's a spy story and I always have to watch spy movies more than once. So maybe that's what the writer and illustrator was selling. Confusing up front, but lots of "oh yea" revelations later.
Reading this actually answered one of my questions from the movie. I never understood why Lorraine gave the coroner wrong numbers.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2023Johnston weaves a complex tale of secrets and betrayals, but his ability as a storyteller ensures he keeps you along the ride that twists and turns with every page as new characters are revealed and others are disposed of after fulfilling their purposes. A terrific yarn, very enjoyable, and definitely recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2018If you're looking for one of the best graphic novels ever; look elsewhere. This isn't a bad GN, just not a game changer like The Dark Knight Returns or Watchmen. Its middle of the road. The story is reasonably fast paced, and easy to follow. Its decidedly British in character. The artwork is decent. Don't expect a bunch of Jim Lee quality splatter pages, you ain't gonna get it, but the art is bleak and the B&W lends itself well to a story that is from a dreary and cold past. In the end its worth a read, but if you saw and loved Atomic Blonde I'll caution it was a somewhat loose adaptation of this GN. Personally I think Atomic Blonde was a much better story that this. The changes made the story much more interesting and added a definite plot twist which was hinted at in the GN, but not explored. If you want to see the source material for Atomic Blonde (that's why I read it) you won't necessarily be disappointed, but if you're expecting the same story in another format you'll likely be left wanting. IF this would be your first foray into GNs I would advise starting with something considerably better first (DKR or Watchment are what I'd recommend). As someone who reads comics regularly I found the story to be decent, but a bit obvious. Ideally the art and writing need to work together to where the art is doing what a picture is supposed to do (be worth 1,000 words). This fell well short of that mark, but was entertaining nonetheless for the 30 minutes it took me to read it. If I'd gone into it without having first seen the film I might have had a different reaction, but probably not. Atomic Blonde was really, really good. Typically a film is lucky to live up to the quality of the source material, most often they fall short (literally every Batman movie thus far is a good example). I can think of two examples where the films were better than the GN: the first is V for Vendetta, and the second is Atomic Blonde.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2018I just love Atomic Blonde and watch it often. So, I wanted to see how closely the graphic novel content was to the movie. They weren’t far afield, just different. Consequently, it’s a treat to own both.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2017Great graphic novel! If you loved the movie "Atomic Blonde" this book will give you even more to think about and enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2020Aside from Classic comics read as a youngster, I've read only 3 GNs. This, FUN HOUSE and STUCK RUBBER BABY.
I know there's a lot to GNs: planning/storyboarding the panels, choosing the right style, inking the panels, editing--same work, maybe more, as with a novel. CC/AB should have been drawn with more care, more detail, more power--by someone like Stan Lee (rather than, say, Mort Walker!) This whole thing is lazily, skimpily drawn, relying on black & white shadows of almost indistinguishable images. No crosshatching, no grays, no depth, no detail. Huge disappointment. The movie was great.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2018Only 4 stars because of the over-grayness of the drawings. The story was a bit hard to follow at times and the drawings just made it more difficult. Still, a good graphic novel, almost as good as The Coldest Winter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice style, illustrations fitting to the genre.
I think some reviews are saying they watched the film and don't like this Graphic Novel. This the original work which the film is based on. The style is actually fitting with the Cold War and the espionage genre. If people can't understand graphic novels are written and illustrated in different ways it's their loss. Both The Coldest Winter and The Coldest City are great to read if you enjoy this type of genre. Going by how the film was isn't really the way to view this work. You will also see how they tweaked with the ending if you have seen the film and it's different from the original. Good graphic novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars scénario complexe, dessin moyen

5.0 out of 5 stars A good graphic novel
I am a fan of graphic novels, so when I found that Atomic Blonde was based on a graphics novel, I was interested in reading it.
I liked the graphic novel a lot -- glad I bought it. The story is similar to the movie, but it isn't identical.
