one of the most important comics in my life
I don't normally write reviews but this one is worth it. Sunstone started a gag series by one of my favorite artists. When first found Sunstone, it wasn't anything more than a collection of gag panels on DeviantArt. I had no idea that they were done by one of my all time favorite artists, stjepan sejic.I don't really know what to say about this series that others haven't. Sex is just the vehicle to tell amazing stories about deep, complex characters who share universal truths about dating, friendships, and not assuming you know what your partner actually thinks. Stories that have me needing the next panel, even as I cringe with guilt that I'm enjoying the suffering of the protagonists. The art conveys so much energy, such life. A side glance from a character tells volumes about their history, the exaggerated expressions and lingering panels that last just long enough to be expressive without being smut.Another author, another time, about another book series, said meta-references don't cover up the weaknesses in a story. In this case, the meta elements about an author and telling a story only enhance, accentuate the narrators involvement. This is a comic series I can share with anyone from my best friends to my partner to my in-laws. It's more than worth it.

I started reading Sunstone on Stjepan Sejic's side DeviantArt account (shiniez) and fell in absolute LOVE with the comic... so I decided to purchase the tidied-up, published version for myself. And boy-oh-boy. Wowwwwwza. T'was money well spent-- no, invested! I love Stjepan's drawing and art style and am a HUGE fan of his work. He puts so much detail into his comics -- from the unique speech bubbles, the amazing plot, the wide-range of expressions he's able to convey in his characters, to the stunning full-page masterpieces. (Seriously, I don't even know what to call those very detailed and realistically colored artwork gems sprinkled throughout the volume.) The writing doesn't fall short. It's engaging throughout the whole volume. It's funny and thoughtful. The main characters, Lisa and Ally, are slowly molded and developed into these colorful, unique characters and are treated like actual human beings with hopes, dreams, and realistic desires. Even the "secondary" characters, like Alan (who is my absolute FAVE), get many chances to shine. Sunstone is truly a creative spin on the erotic genre that is usually associated with one of the most horrid cliche BDSM books of all time (*cough* Fifty Shades of Grey *cough cough*). And-- AND! Yes, it's a F/F pairing... (I have no complaints whatsoever, but it might not be some people's cup of tea?) BUT IT'S NOT TREATED LIKE SMUT! The art is just... I can't even describe it. It's beautiful, gorgeous, sexy, alluring, jaw-dropping, elegant, intimate, aesthetic -- *insert more positive synonyms here*. I feel confident to say it was in NO way made with a male audience in mind. Yes, it's erotic and kinky. (Hello, how can BDSM not be?) But this is NOT porn. So if you're looking for huge (unrealistic) boobs and a whole book full of raunchy nude women -- hit that back button, buddy. This isn't for you. Sure, you could say that it's on the brink of falling into the risque category, but the scenes are perfectly balanced, straddling the line between being racy and intimate. The nudity is sensual and thoughtfully drawn. This is a work of art.

I think I've fangirled over this comic enough. So, in conclusion: get Sunstone! This is a comic that I'm not afraid to recommend to my more adventurous friends. Which I'm now recommending to you, friend. You won't be disappointed! And if you're anything like me, you'll scream/cry when you hit the end.

    Happy reading!

Sunstone was everything I wanted and oh so much more! I'm so pleased, I'm actually grinning writing this review. I laid on the floor in front of my bookshelves, read this, got up, came to my computer and started typing this review with a goofy grin on my face. It just won't go away! I'm so impressed!

Stjepan Šejić worked on the end art of Rat Queens, Vol. 2: The Far Reaching Tentacles of N'rygoth, and I have to say that I wasn't that impressed with it. I was a little apprehensive to go into this, but when I finally found a F/F BDSM graphic-novel (thank you, Chelsea) I really couldn't pass it up. I ended up not only loving the content of this, but also Stjepan Šejić's art. It was so beautifully done, without ever feeling like porn. The whole thing just felt like a positive celebration of female sexuality. Oh, and the entire color pallet of this comic is actually to die for, too.

Obviously, by now you should get the idea what this is about and how this is totally for adults with open minds. If you can't admire the female body and you don't want to read about BDSM themes, then this probably isn't the graphic-novel for you.

This story is about two adorable girls that meet online because of a particular itch they both want scratched, desperately. This story is actually Tarantino-ed a little bit, where we see our sub, Lisa, writing a story about the love of her life. We are then transported into the past where Lisa is meeting Ally, her Dom, online. They talk for over two months and become fast friends. One night, Lisa ends up asking Ally if she would finally like to meet so that they can scratch that itch I talked about previously.

The rest is about the beginnings of their BDSM relationship. And can I just say how freaking adorable and heartwarming it was to see how nervous both of them were to dive into this world for the first time? Like, it was the cutest thing I've read in forever. Hence my still stupid grin.

This comic portrays BDSM so healthily and highlights how important trust and communication are. Open lines of communication and asking questions were both such pivotal plot points in this story, and so important to be represented. Stjepan Šejić is doing the Lord's work with this comic, I swear. They even touch on the importance of aftercare and how it's not just for bodies, but for minds, too. Honestly, this graphic-novel impressed the hell out of me and I cannot wait to order the rest of these.

Also, I loved Stjepan Šejić's drawn out note in the back. Like, can I please have creative blocks that end up developing into something as amazing as Sunstone. I loved this personal touch, and it made me want to read everything he has ever touched. He also made me fall in love with his wife, and now I need to read Blood Stain . Also, let's talk about how they are totally the pinnacle of relationship goals.

Sunstone is, to date, the best graphic-novel I've ever read. I wish I could give it all the stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Una delicia, tanto las ilustraciones como el desarrollo del argumento, a fuego lento.
Reviewed in Spain on October 22, 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars good thing you can draw one-handed.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 27, 2020
I’ve been in a relationship for a while. I had forgotten what it’s like to meet someone that you “click” with. Fortunately, author Stjepan Sejic did not, because this is one of the sweetest, most heartfelt things I’ve read since I got through Saga.

I have a suspicion that a lot of artistic renditions of naked ladies are done because a dude with a pencil was horny and wanted to make his whacking material seem more highbrow than it really was. If I’m right, then a great many masterful pieces of work may well exist because boobies are magnetic to the male soul. I mention that because this is in large part a lesbian bondage comic, and when you mention that, for a lot of folk it suddenly leaps into total clarity why you bought the thing. Well, I’m not going to act like I’m immune to my baser urges; the idea of a Sapphic kink comic was intriguing from the off. Guilty as charged. But that said, what separates this from other naughty artistry is the sheer warmth of it. It captures that heady rush of completely falling for someone so perfectly that it manages to almost substitute it’s eroticism for just raw enjoyment at seeing these characters happy. There’s not even a story to speak of in a conventional sense as of yet, it’s driven solely by its character moments. Basically, two women meet up for a BDSM session; it’s meant to be all about the sex, but immediately their feelings for each other start developing and it’s all captured so well, the awkward, nervous interactions of meeting someone in the latex-clad flesh for the first time and that manic tangle of thoughts immediately preceding it to the euphoric post-coital bliss when it turns out that things went alright. You get engaged in these two, the instantly likeable Lisa and Ally, our Submissive and Dominant. The book comes mostly from Lisa’s perspective as she recounts the events in question; because of this I’m hoping the series itself concludes on a high note because you’ll find me hanging from a light fitting if a series so sweet ends sour. Through her eyes, you can understand – if you didn’t already – why BDSM holds the appeal it does for its fetishists, so more than a tender portrayal of a budding relationship Sunstone also functions as an exploration of this particular fetish so well that even if BDSM isn’t for you the allure of it becomes obvious.

Sex – especially homosexual sex – is stigmatized somewhat. It’s not a new observation by any means, but when I’m trading books with my friend at work I don’t have a second thought about handing her the most perturbingly violent tomes in my collection, but if she were to be caught with…I dunno, “Scalped” by Jason Aaron or something I doubt she’d be as far up crap creek as she would be if she got caught thumbing through Sunstone. This is the sort of appalling stupidity that I would’ve expected of a guy huffing lighter fluid I once got trapped in a conversation with who blamed Eminem for inspiring Jack the ripper. There’s nothing to be furtive or ashamed about for most people when it comes to sexuality. I mean come on, above all, the book is just wholesome - the type of thing that feels good for the soul. A word about the art too; it’s more than just the way people are drawn (which is clean and expressive) but the pages themselves, which often display inventive and thematic panel layouts. Even just superficially, this is a gorgeous piece of work. The colouration helps too – rich, deep reds. This book looks how romance is meant to feel. It’s very light on things that I can meaningfully point to as detractors as well. There’s an occasional janky line here or there that mostly lands flat because it’s unnecessary – there’s one point where Lisa remarks that even angry she can’t help but care about Ally, but the context of the panel itself is completely sufficient to communicate that without the audience needing to be told; the result is clumsy dialogue. It’s not a problem for most of the book and ranks as little besides a nitpick at worst. Thing is, that’s what most of the things that bother me about this book are – nitpicks.

I’ve seen some lesbians express surprise that the book is as well done as it is; they’re used to their representation from the pens of men being somewhat shallower than this. In a sense I feel like that’s the best endorsement of it – the seal of approval from actual people within the communities it represents. It’s not my usual thing, so that perhaps has something to do with how giddy I am over discovering it, but man, I can’t help it, it’s just such a good book, by turns funny, touching and lascivious often within the same page. So if you, dear reader, find yourself with money to burn in the comics budget this month, you could do much worse than pick up this wonderful little volume.
