My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies Kindle & comiXology

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 340 ratings

The first original graphic novel from the bestselling creators of CRIMINAL, KILL OR BE KILLED, THE FADE OUT and FATALE. Teenage Ellie has always had romantic ideas about drug addicts, those tragic artistic souls drawn to needles and pills have been an obsession since the death of her junkie mother ten years ago. But when Ellie lands in an upscale rehab clinic where nothing is what it appears to be... she’ll find another more dangerous romance, and find out how easily drugs and murder go hand-in-hand. MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN JUNKIES is a seductive coming-of-age story, a pop and drug culture-fueled tale of a young girl seeking darkness... and what she finds there. A gorgeous must-have hardback from the award-winning team of ED BRUBAKER and SEAN PHILLIPS, with acclaimed color artist ELIZABETH BREITWEISER.

Review

"Readers of postmodern pulp will enjoy this intense story and unapologetically cunning character." ?Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Close readers of the creator's oeuvre will catch connections to their earlier series, Criminal, but this one still provides plenty of truly twisted twists and wraps up with a pulpy punch of an ending that's satisfying—and heartbreaking—on its own... this stand-alone novella is a fine addition to a staggering body of work." —

Another Round-One Knockout from Team Brubaker-Phillips
Like all great noir, this story is devastating. Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips's return to the Criminal universe is thoughtful and restrained. My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies is original, nuanced, and right at home with other works from these creators. Familiar themes of drugs, crime (duh), and hopelessness are present, along with new insights into the collateral damage from the Criminal universe. This book is short—it took me less than 45 minutes to read, and I took it in at a leisurely pace. The art and writing are on point. The story is creative and novel. Overall, this is a must-have.

I've been reading Ed Brubaker for about a year or more now and I have to say that Ed Brubaker is my favorite scribe when it comes to the art of short stories. My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies is a great read just as the rest of the work of his that I've read.

Solid Brubaker/Phillips entry in the Criminal-verse. While it technically is not branded as a volume of Criminal, there are hints (no spoilers) and such that confirm it. Brubaker is as intriguing as always here, keeping you turning the page. I believe I read it in one sitting, it actually can feel a bit short. If you're not familiar with Brubaker or Criminal, this is a fine place to start. Phillips kills it on the art as usual, although some of his "young" characters can tend to look a little older. The colors are wonderful as well, and the overall package is nice. Definitely worth a buy.

My Hereos Have Always Been Junkies is the first standalone graphic novel by the creators of my favorite gritty crime comics (including the ongoing Criminal series, The Fade Out, recently concluded Kill or Be Killed, and Fatale (a fabulous combination of cosmic horror and and hard-boiled noir). Although this story stands alone, like all the other tales created by Brubaker and Phillips, this is not a place to look for a happy ending. BUT. You aren’t going to get the ending you might be expecting either. Quick, dirty, soulful, and completely satisfying. This book exemplifies why I make sure to read everything that this creative duo puts out.

If you are new to Brubaker and Phillips I am jealous. There is a fantastic catalog of literary art to explore. Exceptional work just continues for this duo. Like the different directions they take moving flawlessly from noir, to crime, to horror to whatever comes next for them. Keep it up!

A criminal novella. Says so on the book, so yes it's another criminal story.
    Lucky us.
Brubakers writing is in top form, as always, and though the coloring is a bit looser than some previous pieces, sean phillips always draws wonderfully.
By the end of it I wanted to go through all the other criminal books from the beginning.
    Worth buying

I thought you would describe the paper used in this book as "matte". It's good paper. I emailed the writer of this book and he wrote back and said that the paper used was RAW. Matte is something else. I'm not sure of the distinction. I feel foolish, but the paper is great. Glossy paper is the worst.
