- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2017It's hard for me to explain why I enjoy this character so much. His stories are dark and brutal, which usually can turn me off to a comic. Then there are the not so favorable comparisons to Batman (and seriously, who is going to rate favorably against Batman in people's eyes). Sure there are similarities, but Moon Knight has a certain quality about him that tends to be lacking in the DC hero.
Huston captures it perfectly in the first few pages, where Marc Spector, the man behind Moon Knight, talks about why he put on the costume to fight crime. It isn't altruism or revenge, despite being the avatar of the Egyptian god of vengeance. No, for him it is about the sheer joy of being able to do it.
There have always been some psychological underpinnings to Moon Knight stories. How much of what is happening is real or in his head? More recent series have tackled that question in greater detail. This book uses a lighter touch to keep the reader guessing without dismissing everything out of hand. Add in a group that wants to manipulate Marc or see him destroyed and the story becomes engaging on another level. Many recurring characters make an appearance, though not all of them are introduced very well.
I thought the art was perfect for this book. From the beginning, Moon Knight has been a violent character. The art capitalizes on that while managing to keep the worst of it off screen. That might make things worse because the reader is left to fill in the blanks. We do get to see the consequences of Marc's actions, both for himself and for those close to him. This book shows Marc at his worst, but gives hope in spite of the dark, gruesome world he occupies.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2021I had never heard of the Moon Knight until I was offered a free read of this Moon Knight collection as part of the Kindle Unlimited program. In this collection, we apparently come into the story at a sort of middle age, where the Moon Knight, Marc Spector, is crippled and abandoned by his god, real or imagined (aren't all gods imagined?) In this collection, Marc returns as the avatar of his god. The god is represented as a bloody version of Marc's old nemesis Raul Bushman. As with Banquo's ghost, Marc can see Bushman, but no one else can.
Some of the flashbacks become confusing, especially when mixed with the Bushman character who appears in both flashbacks and in the current reality, only to be seen by Marc.
The character of the Moon Knight in this collection is a dark one, even compared to the Dark Knight portrayal of Batman. The Dark Knight is a driven obsessive character, but he has a strong underlying moral structure. The Moon Knight seems to exist for vengeance and violence. This is wrecked upon those who deserve it, but this seems to be a thin veneer of justification.
The art in this graphic novel is good and the story is interesting. The first three Moon Knight collections are free for Kindle Unlimited subscribers and they are definitely worth reading, although I would probably not pay for these collections.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2008Hey, I've gotta give this a really really solid 5 stars.
I started out with this volume, having never read moon knight ever before and I think this reallly really kicks some serious @ss!!!
The character Moon knight has apparently been around for a long time.
People have always criticized him as "marvels batman".
I can see them getting away with that before this volume came out.
Not anymore though.
Moon Knight in this volume is a harder, grittier, crazier, character than I've yet to see in all of marvel.
I think he could make batman cry and go hide in his cave, but we won't get into that debate.
The decent and bad reviews I'm seeing here make no sense to me at all...
It's only led me to one conclusion that seems to be happening a lot lately.
Old people need to chill.
As stated in one previous review, this isn't your fathers Moon Knight.
When characters get revamped a lot of old school fans can't deal with it, it's really sad. But I can see Moon Knight's fan base exploding after all this. I don't think you could ask for a better revamp.
The book's writing is severely enjoyable, complex, and well styled. The art is on par with any high end comic and just as superb as the writing.
This book deserves a solid 5 star overall rating for what it is, not what old people who can't deal with change expect it to be.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2008I've always been aware of the Moon Knight character but knew little about him. So, when Moon Knight Vol 1: The Bottom came out, I was eager to give it a read. In short, the artwork is exceptional. It really is well done and I can't say enough about it. However, the story is labeled as a psychological thriller. If that means the same as "abstract" and "confusing," well then I guess they hit the nail on the head. I could see someone's difficulty in following a story if they started reading it in the middle. However, this is book 1 and I knew just as little after reading the final page as I did when I first opened the book. The art gets a 5 out of 5 but the writing gets a 2 out of 5. Overall, I give it 3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark side of the moon knight
A very interesting approach for the Moon Knight as Charlie Huston bring to us readers a remarkable arc of stories to the character.
Grim and gritty just like Moon Knight was primely created in his essence. Is that so, is the character in its purity with all the mistery and psychological issues that Moon Knight/Marc Spector requires. The art is stunning in order to combine with the solidity of the script. David Finch is AWESOME, heavy, deeply strong, everything has weight and wildly beautiful and visceral.
Anyway, a must read to have in our collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST COMICBOOK EVER!
I am a big fan of comics, so I have a lot, and this is no doubt my favourite. The story, admittedly, do not have much action, but the storyline and characters more than make up for that. Charlie Huston is a great writer and David Finch's artwork seems like a perfect match for it.
The character is an ex-soldier and ex-mercenary who was betrayed and murdered in Egypt and was resurrected by the Egyptian god of vengeance and the moon as Moon Knight (this was the original series, which I think was from the 70s.) This is the incredible 21st century reboot of the series. Moon Knight fights the man who killed him in Egypt in New York, killing him, but being injured in the fight. Now, Marc Spector, the not-so-secret identity of Moon Knight, is a drug-addicted man with a split-personality disorber, friendless and alone and deserted by his god, who lives in a wheelchair with a stature of his god. But when one of his former friends is attacked and hospitalised by a gang led by Taskmater, Moon Knight regains the need for vengeance and sets out for it. But with it comes the return of his god, who only he can see and hear.
The story is gripping and epic (in my opinion, worthy of a film - hint) with great art and a cliff-hanger that, I warn you, does make you buy the next book, which is also a great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marvels bad Batman

3.0 out of 5 stars For die hard Moon Knight fans only
Super complex and hard to follow. Nice art and storytelling but way too confusing. For the die hard fans only.
