- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2019I don't usually read sports comics, but I am really enjoying this series. It reminds me of the anime Yuri! on ice. All of the sports lingo is explained through context. There are plenty of fencing specific words and references, but you don't have to be familiar with the sport. There's so much wonderfully exaggerated drama in this series and I love it all. There's also great tension. Potential romantic tension? Rivals to Lovers? Friendship to Lovers? Friendship to Rivals? So many different dynamics of relationships.
Although I am really enjoying this series, I wanted more to happen. There's a lot of build-up. With not much pay out yet. I'll give this book a 4/5, but i have already pre-ordered Volume 3!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2021It’s official, I adore all of these characters, EVEN Aiden. Okay especially Aiden, watching how different he is with his lifelong best friend really hits a special “awww” button. Coach really shined in this volume, watching them play Seiji and Nicholas against each other to bring out the best in each other was *chef’s kiss*.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2019I love this comic way too much. It combines high school drama with a fair amount of what being on a fencing team is actually like.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2021I think it’s interesting that this volume advances the story through the ongoing competition at Kings Row to decide who’s going to be on the high school boarding school’s fencing team and yet also feels like nothing of note happens at all.
The story starts with the day 2 matches and the first one we see is between Aiden and Seiji. It shows the reason why Aiden is on the fencing team even though he never shows up to practice and we learn HOW he fences, which is to say, a bit dirty. He likes riling up his opponents and Seiji is too put together and stoic, so easily rises to the bait. I like that we see here the differences in how Seiji and Nicholas handle someone like Aiden.
Aiden might not be the MAIN character in this series, but I am fascinated by him and what his relationship is with his childhood friend Harvard. I think Aiden might have an unrequited love for him? It’s cute to see them in their down time just hanging out. What’s interesting here is that Aiden is the only explicitly“out” character in the series so far and is known by all to be a playboy on campus who leaves a lot of broken hearts behind him.
We don’t know about Seiji but we get to see a very young Seiji here in this volume who is SO CUTE. I wonder about his relationship with the country’s #1, Jesse Coste. They’ve been in the same competition circuit since they were kids, and Seiji deliberately choosing to attend Kings Row instead of Exton where Jesse went is an interesting decision. I guess we’ll find out the reasoning for that at some point.
By now we know that somehow Jesse and Nicholas are related but what does Jesse know? Does he know that Nicholas exists or is Nicholas the dirty secret their father likes to keep hidden away? Does their father even know about Nicholas? Considering the wealth of money Jesse has at his disposal to be the best fencer in the country, and Nicholas did not, would this mean also that the father isn’t sending cash to Nicholas and his mother as child support? Well, I’m assuming Nicholas’s mother is alive. There has been no mention of whether she’s alive or dead so far. There’s a lot of questions surrounding who knows what in this volume and I want answers.
I think this volume was an okay one. We see a little bit more of the characters and see a little bit more fencing, but I want much more character development. You know how in anime there are episodes that seemingly do nothing because it takes, like, 10 episodes to show one fight? This kind of feels like that, even though I wouldn’t necessarily call it all JUST filler. However, I would really like for this to start moving along please.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, but make sure you're buying the right thing
Great story, but BEWARE for Kindle readers! Fence #2 and Fence Vol. 2 are two different items that Amazon both has as an equivalent of the paperback volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first
I just know that this series is going to be some real enemies to rivals to friends to lovers excellence and if that isn't something that fills me with joy then I don't know what can. The angst is strong and I love how ambitious and positive Nicholas is, he really believes in himself and puts so much effort into improving. I am honestly just having such a good, chill time reading these
