Batman '89 (2021-) #1 Kindle & comiXology

4.5 out of 5 stars 355 ratings

Step back into the Gotham of Tim Burton’s seminal classic Batman movies! Batman ’89 brings in screenwriter Sam Hamm (Batman, Batman Returns) and artist Joe Quinones (Dial H for Hero) to pull on a number of threads left dangling by the prolific director. Gotham becomes torn in two as citizens dressed as Batman and The Joker duke it out in the streets. As D.A. Harvey Dent tries to keep the city together, he targets the one problem tearing it apart: BATMAN! And he’ll get Bruce Wayne’s help in taking down the Dark Knight!

Being born in ‘89 I missed out on the initial hype of the Batman “Burtonverse”. That being said 1989’s Batman and the follow up, 1992’s Batman Returns still played a huge role in my childhood and I still cherish those films to this day! I was elated to find out that not only will Michael Keaton be reprising his role of Batman in Andy Muschietti’s upcoming The Flash, but with the inclusion of the island Corto Maltese in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021) The Burtonverse Batman films are now cannon with the DCEU! What a perfect time to continue this iteration of the dark knight! The first issue is phenomenal, laying the groundwork for what is to come in this limited series. I only wish it were longer!! You won’t want to miss out!

If you loved both Tim Burton Batman movies, then you'll love this. The art is amazing. Characters are spot on, feels like you can hear their voices. Also, there are some peppered Burton references.

One thing is for sure, this comic is made with love for the source material. I am beyond excited for the next issue.

I would recommend to others who enjoy the burton universe. I’m sure the series will be great when it’s finished .

DC has gone woke. This book is not woke. This is a throwback to what made me like Batman. I also love seeing the Batman 89' universe again. I would subscribe to this series. But they would probably drag this series into woke. A miniseries is probably for the best.

Not much happening this first issue but it sets up a nice conflict between Bats and Harvey. The introduction of a new character at the end and a looming showdown with GCPD.
The art was okay although the rendition of Michael Heaton was off a bit.

The biggest failure of this series is the lack of Gotham city as we saw it in the Burton films. The claustrophobic and chaotic architecture which was a mix of gothic revival, Art Deco and hyper industrial is completely missing and replaced with dull, empty streets. The city doesn’t feel menacing like it did in the films and given the heavy handed political themes this might as well have been a story set in the real world.

Also Bruce being sidelined is nothing new especially considering the source material, but does he really have to be completely shown up by robin in every interaction they have? It feels like it’s setting up a pretty interesting character to be a Mary Sue. I want to like robin but the story wants him to be perfect, which isn’t interesting in the slightest.

Aside from character designs and some snappy writing for Bruce, nothing in this story recalls the burton films. The only saving grace for this series is the Harvey story which is admittedly really good.

I loved the idea of returning to this interpretation of Batman, especially finally getting a Billy Dee Williams-style Harvey Dent/Two Face story. Unfortunately, pretty much everything here is a big let down. The art is bland and flat, completely missing any of the atmosphere of the films. I'm sure his work is fine for other titles but clearly Quinones was the wrong choice for this project. Everything that should be distinctive is generic, and even some of the actors don't look right.

The story skips the timeless and eerie feeling of the Tim Burton films in favor of something trying to be more current and contemporary. Again, totally fine in other cases but on this title it's just odd. Even the dialogue feels forced, which is really strange considering the writer is a screenwriter. I'd steer clear or tamp your expectations way down - if you're hoping for an interesting story that takes place in the unique world of Tim Burton's 1989 Batman, you're going to be disappointed.
